5 blinds that will help maximise natural lighting in your home

Letting as much natural light as possible in a room is beneficial in many ways. As natural light is free it makes sense to use it as often as you can rather than wasting electricity and therefore money using artificial light. Natural light is good for your health, it lifts your mood and the ambience in the room making it feel more open, light and spacious. Most rooms have a window of some sort, whether it's a large picture window, or a small skylight style, you should invest the time to make it a design priority in your home. However, having a window is just the start of maximising natural light; covering it with heavy curtains will defeat the object as they will restrict the amount of light entering the room. Here's 5 blinds that will help maximise natural lighting in your home.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are undoubtedly the master when it comes to allowing as much light as possible into a room. Their design enables you to roll them up to the top of the window during the day time to expose the window in its entirety, giving you an unrestricted view to the outside and in turn maximising the amount of light entering the room.

Of course they also have the ability to be lowered as much or as little as you need, to help prevent too much harsh sunlight entering the room as the sun moves across the sky. For example, to reduce the amount of light on a computer or television screen. When the light fades into evening a roller blind can be lowered to give complete privacy.

Roman Blinds

Like roller blinds Roman blinds can be raised or lowered to expose the window or give privacy, however, unlike roller blinds there is always a section of the blind showing at the top of the window. This is not a bad thing, in fact many designers prefer this style of window blind because it allows for colour, texture and pattern to be visible at all times. Roman blinds can soften the visual harshness of a completely exposed window, giving a stylish appearance and maximising light.

If you have a large expanse of glass, or several windows in the same room, having Roman blinds raised to varying levels will give instant visual appeal that is ideal for contemporary and modern homes. Choosing Roman blinds in lightweight fabric, more especially if they are a pale colour will also allow more light into the room.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds can also be pulled to the top of the window to maximise natural light, but this isn’t usually the norm due to their design leaving too much bulk. However, if you want to maximise the amount of light and have privacy from prying eyes Venetian blinds are the perfect choice. Angling the slats so that they are completely horizontal, opening the blind, will allow light into the room without anyone being able to see inside.

Vertical Blinds

Ideal for patio doors and walls of glass, vertical blinds give you the same light control as Venetian blinds, but rather than working horizontally the slats operate vertically. You can chose whether to stack them back to the right or left, and if you have them larger than the window or doors the whole glass will be exposed when they are opened, stacked back. Privacy can also be maintained by altering the angle of the vertical louvres.

Sheer Blinds

Lightweight fabrics such as voile, organza and some types of silk will give a beautiful window dressing with privacy when closed, however, due to the transparent or semi-transparent nature of the fabric they will allow a certain amount off light into the room. Opt for pale colours or white to help maximise the amount of natural lighting in your home.
